Jan Hoch were appointed to carry out the refurbishment of a 50m/2 private residential apartment in Chelsea, London. This project was really an exercise in efficient design and dynamic spatial planning. Firstly, all existing partitioning was removed to maximise the useable footprint. A standard fitted kitchen was not desirable in a property of these dimensions; instead we designed a system that secretes all the necessary appliances (hob, sink, oven, dishwasher, fridge freezer and washing machine) within a faux bookcase. In this way we managed to combine a relaxed living area and a functional modern kitchen within the same space. Similar tactics where used throughout the apartment: a false wall disguises the bedroom cabinets; the bathroom was made to appear much brighter and larger through extensive use of mirroring; and solid oak flooring running throughout the property creates a perception of increased size.
